A critical upgrade was completed on Boiler No. 3, where the existing water/mud drum had reached the end of its service life and was replaced. The boiler bank tubes connecting the mud drum at ground level to the steam drum 19 meters above were also replaced.
To facilitate the work safely, a temporary support system was designed to hold the steam drum in position during construction. The solution incorporated the existing staircase
structure, a newly designed support tower, and a new gantry spanning between them.
A 3D laser scan of the boiler area revealed that the existing boiler bank tube drawings were outdated. The scan data was used to develop an accurate set of updated engineering drawings, supporting both the replacement work and future maintenance.
The project demonstrated the value of innovative temporary works design and laser scanning technology in delivering safe, efficient, and successful plant upgrade projects.
